“Meet my Culture” cycle - Greek culture

Data: 17.12.2024 Kategoria: All

On Friday, 22nd of November 2024, in the space of the fourth floor of the L building, there was organised a meeting from the “Meet my Culture” cycle. The attending members of our academic community could acquaint themselves with Greek culture. According to the guidelines of the event, it was presented by the Greeks themselves – the students of the UBB who are here for this semester within their Erasmus+ mobility.

The meeting was opened by dr Dagmara Mika, who presented the basic information on the project “Internationalisation Starts at Home – the Right Direction”, co-financed by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange within the framework of the “Welcome to Poland” programme. She also presented the overview on the economic co-operation between Poland and Greece. Then, together with Bartosz Dębowski, they presented a general picture of the Polish-Greek bilateral diplomatic relations.

After that, the floor was given to the Greek students: Ms. Zoi Georgakopoulou, Mr. Aristotelis Kostoulas, Mr. Georgios Koutsiouroumpas, Mr. Vasileios Tounas and Mr. Aristeidis Tziachanas. In their grand presentation, they shown, in a concise form, the facts about their homeland and its culture which they found the most important. They started from the basic information on the geographical location of Greece and recalled the basis of what the Greek culture connects with for anyone who has undergone the Polish basic education: the Greek mythology. Then, in a concise way they summarised long and complex history of Greece: from the antiquity, the development of the Greek antic democracy, through the times of Byzantine Empire, the Greek national uprising in the 19th century, until the 20th century and the events closer to the present times. Next, there was the contemporary culture of Greece, the most important holidays for Greeks and a choice of the Greek phrases most important for the tourists visiting that country according to the authors.

That freshly gained knowledge was tested in a quiz that directly followed the presentation. Those, who gave the highest number of fast and correct responses have been rewarded by prize packages prepared by the UBB Welcome Point.

The last point of the programme was the cuisine presentation. Firstly, the Greek students told about the Greek cuisine, which tale was illustrated on the screen. An appetite awaken in such a way could be satisfied by tasting the meals prepared by our Greek students especially for the meeting. They served a feta cheese, tzatziki and a Greek village salad. The UBB Canteen also was involved in this aspect of the event and a Polish edition of a Greek salad was presented in effect.

The participants of the meeting walked out of it enriched with both food for thought and for the palate. We hope that this event would help fostering the integration of our academic community and that it would be an incentive for deeper discovery of the Greek culture.
